Obituary of Philip Joseph Salomone

Philip Joseph Salomone 1930 ~ 2012 MONTEREY - Philip Salomone, 81, passed away after a sudden illness, surrounded by loved ones. He was born in Sophia, West Virginia and moved to Monterey with his parents and six siblings in 1933. After living in Oak Grove, the family moved into their larger home on Larkin Street where they lived a joyous life in a close knit Sicilian Catholic community. Phil cherished his memories of his family's grocery store on Alvarado and best friends Joe Favalora, Nino Sorci, Joe Canciamille, Jack Marterella and Art Sampagnaro. He fell in love with Phyllis, married, adopted a daughter and created a loving family. Phil worked at Fort Ord as a Transportation Officer for over 30 years and then worked part time at Cardinale Moving and Storage followed by Cota Moving & Storage in his retirement. Phil and Phe began bowling late in life and worked out at the Cardiopulmonary Wellness Gym, creating wonderful friendships. He spent every sunny day tending to his garden and grafting fruit trees. Phil recently joined the Italian Catholic Federation and treasured seeing all of his childhood friends. He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Phyllis; his parents; brothers, Angelo and Alfonso; sister, Mary; Buscemi family members and multiple dogs named Butch. We are grateful to Dad's "Dream Team" for their amazing supportive care over the years: Drs. M. Galloway, H. Jang, C. Olcott, A. Marangioni, G. Satow, W. Verlenden, J. Rheim, L. Rosenblum, Anderson, and more recently Drs. A. Centurion, R. Koshinski, M. Davis and P.Tocchet. The staff at Cardiopulmonary Associates, Rite-Aid Pharmacy at Del Monte Center, Community Hospital, and Westland House always made us feel like family. Thank you. We will miss his smiles, silly sense of humor and unconditional love. Any memorial contributions can be made to Monterey County Animal Services, 160 Hitchcock Road, Salinas, CA 93908-9450 where we adopted his little grand "kids." There will be a vigil service in his honor at Mission Mortuary on Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. Please visit www.missionmorturary.com to sign the online guest book.
